Sri Lankan designer Kali Arulpragasam makes jewelry dipped in strong statements

If you need any further proof that global youth culture is steeped in hip hop (we find this ironic, since the genre is so lame in the U.S. these days), look no further than the go-to-hell jewelry line, Super Fertile. Designed by the Sri Lankan fashionista Kali Arulpragasam aka the rapper M.I.A.’s sister, the collection makes all kinds of political statements. The series of earrings called Rich Girl vs. Poor Girl, comments on the de-humanizing caste system in India. Her animal rings Endangered Species, meanwhile, seem to come from the same place of social unrest that rap music’s earliest work did with intimidating looking bulls and rhinos. Not to mention they’re just a cooler, more unique way of getting your multi-finger ring street cred on than the age-old Brooklyn Fulton Street style.
